What is an electric heater?
An electric heater is a device that converts electricity into heat. Using a heating element, an electric heater turns electricity into warmth. When we talk about an electric heater, we're often referring to the portable heating that functions as supplementary heating. You can divide electric heating into two types: convection heating and radiant heat.
With heating by convection, the heater releases warmth into the air, creating air currents that spread evenly throughout the room. This lets you heat the whole house at once, but it uses a lot of gas and takes a long time.
With heating by radiant heat, the warmth is transferred to objects in the room. This way, an electric heater heats a single room quickly and affordably. If you generate your own electricity through solar panels, for example, then electric heating is a cheap and sustainable option. Especially with an eye on the future, when every home moves away from gas.
How does an electric heater?
You simply plug an electric heater into a wall socket. The heating works instantly. You can use it as supplementary heating or as your main heating. Please note: to heat an entire house, you'll need several electric heaters.
The benefits of an electric heater
As mentioned earlier, an electric heater comes with a lot of benefits. We've clearly explained these for you below.
More eco-friendly than gas
Electricity can be generated from sustainable energy sources such as the sun, wind and geothermal heat. These sources never run out and have no negative impact on the environment. The burning of gas, on the other hand, does contribute to CO2 emissions and is also finite. That means that one day we'll run out of gas. Electricity generated from sustainable sources is therefore a lot more sustainable than gas. Especially when you generate the electricity for your electric heater yourself with solar panels.
Cheaper to run than gas
An eco-friendly electric heater is cheaper to run than gas heating. Just look at the SmartMi Heater 1s from Xiaomi, which is much lower in consumption than a normal gas heating system. Because electric heaters are lightweight, you can take them with you when you move from room to room. This way you can heat your whole house with a few electric heaters.
We did the math:
The SmartMi Heater 1s from Xiaomi consumes a total of 9 kWh in the eco-friendly 900 Watt mode over one full day of 10 hours. 1 kWh costs 0.58 euros on average (price level August 2022). This works out to 9 x 0.58 = 5.22 euros.
An average home in winter has a gas consumption of 10 m3 per day. At the current price of 2.6 euros per m3 (August 2022) you spend 26 euros per day. That makes the SmartMi Heater 1s exactly 5 times cheaper. Subject to the condition that the SmartMi Heater 1s heats as much space as the gas heating.
Low purchase costs
The purchase price of a gas heater is higher than that of an electric heater. That's because with gas you pay not only for the heater itself, but also for the connection costs. With an electric heater this isn't the case, because it's very easy to connect. You just plug it into the socket and switch the heater on, after which the warmth flows into the room. So this saves you a lot in money, time and maintenance. By the way, you have to ask yourself whether gas is still worth the investment, with the risen prices and the government's plans to be gas-free by 2050.
Fast warm-up
An electric heater spreads warmth within a few minutes. With gas, this takes fifteen minutes to half an hour. Plus, you can use the electric heater wherever you want. Moving to another room? Just take the heater with you. As mentioned earlier, taking an electric heater along is really easy because they're generally lightweight.
Safer than gas
An electric heater is safe to use, so unlike with a gas heater, you don't run the risk of CO poisoning, which we also call carbon monoxide poisoning. Even if one electric heater fails, it won't cause a big problem, because each electric heater operates independently.
Remotely controllable
The electric heaters from the Xiaomi brand can all be controlled via your smartphone, namely through the Xiaomi Mi Home App. This is really handy for an electric heater and can prevent a lot of power usage! For example, you can turn on your electric heater while you're on your way home, so you come back to a warm room. This means you don't have to leave the heating on all the time, but only five minutes before you need it.
No support for Russia
A large part of our gas comes from Russia. By not using gas but heating your home with an electric heater instead, you indirectly stop supporting Russia in the war.
