The bigger the space, the harder an air purifier has to work, and most give up when it comes to an open-plan kitchen-living room. The Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier Max is built for spaces from 63 to 108 m² and moves well over 1,000 m³ of air per hour. At the same time, at night it drops back down to 19.1 dB, quieter than a whisper. So that's one device for the entire downstairs, instead of one in every room.
Inside are two filters, top and bottom, each with a pre-filter, a HEPA layer and 300 grams of activated carbon. Two UVC modules give the air extra treatment. Six sensors measure particulate matter, formaldehyde, temperature and humidity. On the display you can see right away what cooking or vacuuming does to the air.
You can operate it on the device itself, in the Xiaomi Home app or with Alexa and Google Assistant. The castors let you roll the air purifier from the living room to the bedroom, and you swap the filters through a magnetic door.

How the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier Max filters your indoor air

Air purifier for rooms from 63 to 108 m²
One motor drives two fans, each pulling air through its own filter. This gives the Max a measured CADR of 1,006.5 m³/h. That's about 15,000 liters of clean air per minute.
In practice, a 10 m² children's room is fully refreshed once in 1.6 minutes. A 25 m² bedroom takes about 4 minutes, and a 40 m² living room just over 6 minutes.
That makes it big enough for an open-plan living room with a kitchen. Xiaomi lists a suitable space of 63 to 108 m², depending on how many times per hour you want the air refreshed.

Formaldehyde sensor and sleep mode at 19.1 dB
Six sensors measure PM1, PM2.5, PM10, formaldehyde, temperature and humidity. The large display shows the values live, so you can immediately see what cooking, vacuuming or an open window does to the air.
The formaldehyde sensor is what sets the Max apart from the 6 Plus. Formaldehyde is released from new furniture, floors and paint. Now you can also see how quickly that value drops.
In sleep mode the Max runs at 19.1 dB, quieter than a whisper. So you can just leave it on next to your bed. During the day you simply switch back to more power in the app or on the device.

Rollable air purifier with flat top
The Max comes with swivel wheels. During the day you place it in the living room, and in the evening you roll it to the bedroom. That way one device gives you clean air throughout the whole house.
At 29 by 29 cm it takes up little floor space, even though it stands 76 cm tall. The top is closed and flat. No dust falls in, and you can use it as an extra surface to put things down.
You swap the filters through a magnetic door, without any tools. You don't have to keep track of when that's needed yourself: the device and the app give you a heads-up when it's time.
How does the Xiaomi Mijia Smart Air Purifier Max compare?
Three models, one series. The Max is the biggest: the highest CADR, the largest coverage, and the only one with a formaldehyde sensor.
